Nestled between gently rolling hills, Kemur Equestrian Girls Camp is a summer paradise for aspiring English style riders. Kemur’s growth planned for accommodating 60 campers each week during summer. They wanted a building to serve there needs and look good. The multi-purpose building contains an office, gift shop, girl’s house and staff residence; keeping it functional, an exceptional use of space and appropriate to its country surroundings were the main areas of focus while designing this structure.
The lightly coloured exterior compliments its atmosphere, with a refined country estate feel. This building is charming and has many practical design elements. Unique features such as the cupolas and trim detailing assist in creating an enchanting country feel.
The custom built office and gift store have striking architectural details that originated directly from the land. The majority of the wood details, a mix of cherry and oak, were trees that grew on the land. These woods were used by Frey to create signature design elements that pay tribute to the property. Harmonizing the owner’s antique collection into the design, Frey installed a distinctive window between the store and the office. Coffered ceilings, a fireplace, large windows with a view of the valley, and ceramic tile with in-floor heating make work, rest and play a little more cozy.
Built to handle the needs of thirty busy campers, the design is purposeful and well thought out. Outdoor stacked shoe storage greatly reduces the amount of dirt inside the bunk house and helps to keep the girls organized. Features such as the cathedral ceilings create a great deal of room for the bunk beds, and the practical layout of the washroom facilities are designed for easy cleaning.
The staff living quarters maintains the organized and clean feeling of the rest of the building while continuing to incorporate the owner’s unique taste. Frey used another antique in this room by including a hand carved door from the owners collection. Extra touches like these make this living area a special home away from home.
With a desire to incorporate the old with the new, as well as create a tribute to the beautiful country landscape, this structure is elegant but practical. The personal touches of beautiful wood harvested from the owner’s forest and antique details fitting in to the design, this building will create many memorable summers for years to come.
